SECOND GRADE LESSON PLAN SAMPLE

Gee-Mart Sample 2nd Grade Diabetes Lesson Plan

Lesson Name: What's Your Sign?

Standard: Expectation 3 - Students will practice behaviors that reduce the risks of becoming involved in potentially dangerous situations and react to potentially dangerous situations in ways that help to protect their health.

Objective: Students will differentiate between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and recognize the common signs of diabetes.

Materials: Student writing worksheet.

Key Words: excessive, urination, blurry, vision, sudden, wounds, numb, tingling and thirst.

Motivation: Teacher will review what students have already learned about diabetes, specifically what diabetes is, and what insulin is.

Direct Instruction: Teacher tells students that; Type 1 diabetes is a disorder where there is little or no insulin produced, which causes high blood glucose levels (Hyperglycemia) and other signs. Type 2 diabetes is when the body isn't working correctly with the insulin (insulin resistant) or there is not enough insulin. This also causes hyperglycemia and other signs.
Teacher lists signs of Diabetes on board (excessive tiredness, excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurry vision, constant hunger, sudden weight loss, wounds that won't heal, and numbness or tingling of hands or feet). Teacher describes each sign. Teacher writes keywords in left hand column and asks students to make connections using context clues to create their own vocabulary. Teacher asks students to raise their hand if they have felt those signs (ask for each sign individually). Allow time for discussion. Give statistic of how many people exhibit those symptoms (1 out of 20). Ask students if they know of any family or friends that have exhibited those signs. Allow time for discussion.

Independent Practice Activity/ Evaluation: Students will write a sentence to describe the pictures that portray the common signs of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
