About the Curriculum

Gee-Mart has put together a powerful curriculum that focuses on both healthy living and diabetes education. This curriculum is a tool that children and their families can use to understand the disease as well as get practical information on how to prevent or maintain it through conscious living, healthy eating and exercise. By decreasing childhood obesity, we can help decrease the rate of juvenile onset of type 2 diabetes.
Our curriculum is grade level specific, and takes into account the California State Standards in all core areas including Health, Language Arts, Math, Art, Science, and Physical Education.
All lessons were reviewed by a panel of teachers to ensure the use of best practices, ease of implementation and for grade level accuracy. They were also reviewed by medical professionals for accurate diabetes information and a registered dietician for nutritional accuracy and relevancy.
The lessons are divided into four categories; Diabetes Awareness, Nutrition, Exercise, and Care and Maintenance. Each lesson concludes with relevant hands on activity to reinforce the concepts learned. Most lessons have a Home-School Connection letter. This piece of the curriculum is sent home to the parents summarizing what the kids have learned and some activities that the parents can participate in as well. After every three lessons, there is a cumulative assessment to track student progress.

Our curriculum is designed to educate the whole family, not just the child. Our Adult Education component supplies adults with vital information that empowers them to make healthy choices for their families..
