THERE ARE TWO MAIN TYPES OF DIABETES

Type 1 Diabetes usually starts in late childhood, but can happen in early infancy through late adulthood. In people with Type 1 Diabetes the pancreas produces too little or no insulin. Without enough insulin blood sugar (glucose) builds up in the bloodstream resulting in high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). People with type 1 diabetes require insulin injections every day.

Type 2 Diabetes Used to occur in late adulthood but now commonly occurs in children, teens and young adults. In people with type 2 diabetes the pancreas produces insulin but the body's cells are resistant to the insulin. Glucose continues to build up in the blood stream leading to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).

People with diabetes have increased blood glucose due to an absence of insulin, or failure to respond to the effects of insulin.
• Glucose is a kind of sugar the body cells use for energy
• Much of the food we eat is turned into glucose in the stomach
• Glucose enters the bloodstream through the digestive process
• Glucose travels to the body cells from the bloodstream
• Insulin is a hormone that helps control glucose levels
• Beta cells, which make insulin, are located in the pancreas
• The pancreas is an organ that lies behind the stomach
• Insulin allows glucose in the bloodstream to enter body cells
*Beta Cells (bay-tuh selz) which are found in the pancreas, make insulin, a hormone that controls blood glucose..

Since the pancreas can no longer produce insulin people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin shots every day.

Among the first steps in treating type 2 diabetes is:

• meal planning

• weight loss

• exercise

Exercise and weight loss both help insulin to work better. Many people with type 2 diabetes will also need to take medications

When blood glucose is too high it can cause damage to the blood vessels and can lead to damage of body cells and organs. Diabetes is a lifelong disease.
