COMPARISON SHOPPING
If children are to become responsible consumers, they need experiences that teach skills for decision making.

Learn the meanings of the ingredients on Food Labels
While shopping read labels with your child.
Children learn habits from those around them. Developing food selection skills can start in the preschool years. In the grocery
store children learn from what
they see adults doing
.

Talk about big and small sizes,
color and quality; fresh, frozen,and
canned foods; the amountof time
required to prepare them and who
will prepare them.

Talking about the reasons for purchases introduces children to comparative shopping.

Talk about what you are buying and why you decide to buy one food instead of another.

Instead of giving children the
task of selecting sweets, involve children in real food and nutrition decisions for the family.

The Food Exchange System

The Food Exchange System provides a quick way to estimate energy (calories), carbohydrates, protein and fat content in any food or meal.

Bliss at Store

Food from each exchange (starch, meat & meat substitute, fruit, vegetable, milk and fat) is defined so that one serving of each food contains the same amount of carbohydrate, protein, fat and energy (calories).

Free foods contain fewer than 20 calories per serving and less than 6 grams of carbohydrate per serving. Many vegetables are considered "free" foods, such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage, cucumbers and zucchini.

Moderation is the key.
Eight (8) servings of a free food (160 calories) is equivalent to one English muffin.
